Doug, my husband and partner in crime, made an interesting blog post about his desk and what it says about him and his life. It got me to thinking about what fills our lives and time and how we keep it all straight. Many people ask me how I balance it all; wifedom, motherhood, my business and my friendships keep me very busy. The answer: Apple Things.
Things allows me to keep track of my to-dos, prioritize projects, assign projects to my intern (Hi Christine!) and set due dates. It is a very useful piece of software. But it also pretty much sums up my life. Have a look -

Really, where else can you see "sign up for infant CPR" next to "make a sample album for Jeannie?" Or "order business cards" right above "make a living will?" At times, I wonder why I always feel so busy and so frazzled and then I stop, and breathe, and look at my Things list. There's a lot to do when you're a photographer and a mom and a wife and a wanna-be Martha. I'm a busy girl, but Things sure does help.

THINGS!
it's a total lifesaver for our biz and life! you should try setting up "areas" so you an keep track of what's going on and needs to be done for all the different parts of life :) we've also setup each wedding client as a project than then we can make all of their steps, tasks, etc. a part of.

Every year at Christmas, I like to send a little something to the wonderful people who support my business and my photography. So when I met Diana Phillips, a crazy mad-scientist-meets-graphic-artist-meets-chocolate-queen, I knew we had to collaborate on a project together. And when I emailed her, proposing that she make me my own couture collection of truffles and allow me to design the packaging, I thought for sure she would say "thanks, but you're crazy." Much to my excitement, Diana was game for working with me and so my 2-month long custom chocolate project was born....
The packaging: homemade papers in cream, ivory, blush and light blue, hand-sewn by Diana herself, and made in to a beautiful box. The chocolate themselves were wrapped in more hand-made paper and topped with a custom made menu/thank-you-card/holiday-card. The box was wrapped in velvet ribbon, a bit of twine (ya'll know how much I love my twine!) and topped with one-of-a-kind cabochons and brooches.
The chocolates: dark chocolate truffles in the shape of tiny flowers, filled with amazing flavors like Lilac, Lavender and Violette. Yumm.
It was an amazing project to work on and I had a blast trying my hand at the art of packaging. And, of course, chocolate-eating ;)

I am the first to admit that I am an obsessive-compulsive researcher. So imagine my dilemma when I was researching (i.e., shopping for!) baby gear. Not only was it unchartered territory, but there's all sorts of safety, health and budget issues to consider. I fancy myself a bit of an expert when it comes to baby gear that doesn't suck, so I thought it might make a good Cat's Meow for this week.
First up is the Svan High Chair -

I was totally shocked to discover that the vast majority of high chairs are ugly, plastic eyesores. And I quickly found out that a cool, stylish highchair can cost an arm and a leg ($500 bucks easily). Given that this piece of furniture was going to be out in my kitchen all the time, I wanted something made of real wood and with a stylish silhouette. I also knew that whatever highchair I bought was going to be spilled on, barfed on, chewed on and generally abused, so I wanted something rugged and not too expensive.
Behold, the Svan High Chair. This thing is real wood, easy to clean (a dishwasher safe tray!) and comes with a real fabric cushion (no vinyl duck-print here!). The only downside... it's made in Sweden and requires assembly (who hasn't cursed at Ikea?). Be prepared to polish off a bottle of wine while you try to dicipher the directions.
Next is Sophie the Giraffe. I was a little shocked at the price tag on this one ($20 for what looks like a glorified dog toy), but after reading the reviews on Amazon I decided to give it a whirl. Sophie is a BPA-free rubber giraffe, who is painted with food-safe paints. She is soft, squishy, squeeks when you hug her and Maxfield is bananas about her. We have a lot of teething toys, but this one is hands-down the household favorite.

What nursery is complete without a mobile? While pregnant, I looked and looked for a mobile for Max's room and all I could find was stuffed seals, or pink elephants or chubby bunnies. Definitely not my cup of tea. While perusing BabyEarth.com (a great website, by the way), we discovered Flensted Mobiles - simple paper mobiles with a cool graphic flair. Here's the one we decided on -

Another great site for all things rebel-baby is BabyWit.com. We've made a few purchases here, but our favorites have been a cool messenger-style diaper bag for Doug and this awesome onesie that was given to us as a gift -

Speaking of cool stuff for daddies, Doug has become a huge fan of Rockabye Baby. This company takes songs from adult bands, like Green Day to The Rolling Stones, and turns them in to baby-friendly lullabies. The baby loves them and Doug gets a kick out of hearing Metallica's Master of Puppets played on a xylophone.

Rockabye Baby is available at Fawn and Forest, one of my favorite baby websites.
Last up is the Binth Baby Book. This was definitely a splurge for me, but I knew I wouldn't keep up with journaling if I had to look at something ugly. This baby book is full of beautiful, graphic silk-screened illustrations and it truly is a pleasure to write in.

Viola! All things baby that make me go "meow." Next week - office supplies that make my day!

For a while now, I've been wanting to do a weekly blog feature on things that make me swoon. Art, clothes, baby gear, recipes - anything that I love and want to share with my readers. So, I woke up and decided today was as good a day as any! So here goes nothin'!

Today, I want to share some artists whose work I love. When Doug and I moved in to this house one year ago, I became painfully aware that all the art and photography in our home was our own. Don't get me wrong, I love to display our work, but I wanted to diversify a bit. Being that we aren't rich, I turned to Etsy to find affordable prints from talented, lesser-known artists.
First up is Sharon Montrose. I found her on etsy, fell in love and then suddenly started seeing her name everywhere. She was recently mentioned in PDN and has been getting a ton of buzz. I am most enamored with Sharon's simple images of rescue animals on white.

I finally bit the bullet and bought four of her smaller open-edition prints and framed them in our kitchen. These are 7x7 prints, surrounded by white double-weight mats and placed in 16x20 frames -

After discovering Sharon, I stumbled upon Marisa Haedike, of Creative Thursday, who is a super-talented illustrator and painter. She does an adorable series of painting featuring her own cast of animals, from polar bears and owls to bunnies and birds. I was looking for something to hang in Max's room, which would be sweet and fun, without being too baby-ish. I was completely twitterpated when I found Marisa's work.

Lastly, Doug and I just remodeled our bedroom and I was looking for something to hang above the bed. I, of course, turned again to Etsy. I found a prolific toy-camera shooter from Montreal, named Bomobob. I immediately fell in love with his graphic, vintagey images and simply had to have a few for the new bedroom.

These are 8x8 prints, framed and matted as 11x14s.

Hey Chenin, I'm over the moon that you featured me on your blog! Thanks so much. Those prints look fabulous the way you framed and hung them. I'm so happy to see them in such a wonderful home.

what a great idea, and what wonderful artists you've found -- and your house is darling! i've been looking for sweet-but-not-babyish artwork for my toddlers, too, so this is a huge help. thank you!!

Hi Chenin! Love your style. So quirky and lovely. May I ask where you got the off-center mats (and frames!--but particularly the mats). I do very little matting and framing (clients do many more canvases) but I am looking for off-center square mats for a personal gift.
